Combining thin beef strips that have been fried to golden perfection with rich earthy and aromatic sesame really packs a punch when it comes to blow your mind gorgeous flavours. The meat once fried becomes semi – crispy and develops the perfect nooks and crannies to hold the sweet sticky delicious sauce so you get all the wonderful flavours with each bite.

 

 

The sauce has a little bit of everything: earthiness, nuttiness, sweetness, saltiness and spice; in just the right proportions so that each mouthful is a celebration of flavours. Perfect served with steamed rice or your favourite noodles. I can guarantee you will not be able to help yourself from repeatedly stealing pieces of beef whilst the noodles or rice is cooking!

Ingredients
  • Meat:
  • 500g beef strips, cut against the grain
  • 1 tbsp soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • ¾ cup (95g) corn flour
  • Oil for frying
  • Sauce:
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • ½ tbsp garlic, finely crushed
  • ½ tbsp ginger, finely crushed
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1/3 cup (65g) brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp soya sauce
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 cup (2 large) carrots, julienned
  • ½ tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
Directions
  • Step 1 In a large bowl mix the beef strips with the soya sauce and sesame oil.
  • Step 2 Add in the cornflour and mix till fully combined. The beef strips will be lightly coated with a thin batter.
  • Step 3 In a large pan add enough oil to cover at least ¼ inch (5mm) of your pan. Heat oil to medium high. Fry the beef in batches, cooking for 2- 3 minutes, till golden brown and crisp. Drain on paper towel and set aside.
  • Step 4 In a pan heat the oil for the sauce and add the garlic and ginger. Cook for a 2 – 3 minutes.
  • Step 5 In the meantime, combine all the rest of the sauce ingredients other than the carrots and sesame seeds.
  • Step 6 Add the combined ingredients to the pan and cook on medium till the sauce thickens and becomes syrupy.
  • Step 7 Add in the carrots and cook until they become slightly tender.
  • Step 8 Add the crispy beef to the sauce and stir till all the meat pieces are coated in the sauce. Take off the heat.
  • Step 9 Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and serve immediately.
