Beautifully soft red velvet crepes filled with a decadently light cream cheese mousse and finished with a drizzle of sweet tangy cream cheese glaze. A deliciously indulgent breakfast, perfect for that someone special.

I love red velvet, it’s one of my all-time favourite flavours, so much so that it was also the flavour of my beautiful wedding cake. The fact that my hubbie also loves red velvet was another sign for me that he really and truly was the one for me, and so of course our wedding cake could only ever have been red velvet.

That was one of the requirements on my list for my perfect one which I one night declared on a girl’s night out, years before I ever met my husband. Now other than loving red velvet there were other very specific requirements like “he must have a beauty spot on his lips”, “he must have soulful eyes” and “he needs make me laugh ”. My friends and I giggled and laughed at my ridiculous list and it was soon forgotten. Several years later I met a certain someone and after having known him for a few months, I remembered this list and could not believe how he met each and every requirement from my silly list. I had met my perfect one!

Not surprisingly we got married a few months after that revelation, and to this day he is the perfect one for me and can still make me laugh, and by that I mean properly laugh so that my insides hurt and I’m snorting and crying at the same time, and instead of getting repulsed at my crazy laugh he beams away with such happiness that even after all these years he is the only man who can make me laugh like that!

In all the craziness of life and business of motherhood I often do forget to show him how much he means to me, but one of the ways he knows is by me cooking for him as he truly does love his food (another requirement from my long forgotten list!). I make these red velvet crepes especially for him on special occasions such as our anniversary, Father’s Day or valentines or just when I want him to know that I really do love him, as they really are “I love you” on a plate! It is the perfect breakfast for any red velvet lovers!

Beautifully soft red velvet crepes filled with a decadently light cream cheese mousse and finished with a drizzle of sweet tangy cream cheese glaze. A deliciously indulgent breakfast, perfect for that someone special.


  • Crepes
  • 1 ½ cups(190g) plain flour
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 5 ½ tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 cups (500ml) buttermilk
  • 1 tsp cider vinegar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup (55g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ tsp vanilla paste
  • ½ tsp red food colour (I use colour paste)
  • Oil for lightly greasing
  • Drizzle
  • 1 ½ cups (190g) icing sugar
  • ½ cup (60g) cream cheese
  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk
  • ¼ tsp vanilla paste
  • ¼ tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • Cream Cheese Mousse
  • 1 ½ cups (190g) icing sugar
  • ½ cup (110g) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup (225g) mascarpone
  • 1 tbsp vanilla paste
  • ½ cup (125ml) drizzle
  • Step 1 Make Crepes: In a large bowl combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt.
  • Step 2 In a separate bowl thoroughly whisk the buttermilk, vinegar, egg, butter, vanilla and food colour. Whisk until fully combined.
  • Step 3 Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredient mixture and beat until it is all mixed well.
  • Step 4 Heat a crepe pan or large frying pan over medium. Lightly brush with some oil. Pour approximately 1/4 cup – 1/3 cup of batter (depending on the size of your pan), quickly lift the pan and swirl batter around so that it forms a thin circle. Allow to cook on one side for approximately 2-4 minutes. You will see the edges lift up from the pan and crepe will be set. Flip crepe over and cook for further 30 seconds – 1 minute on the other side. Repeat until the batter has been used up.
  • Step 5 Make Drizzle: Combine all the ingredients and using a hand mixer or mixing stand beat all the ingredients together until you have a smooth , slightly runny drizzle. You can adjust how runny you prefer your drizzle by adding more or less milk.
  • Step 6 Make Cream Cheese Mousse: Using a hand mixer or mixing stand whisk the butter and sugar until creamy.
  • Step 7 Add the mascarpone and beat on medium until you have a fully combined.
  • Step 8 Add the vanilla and drizzle and beat for a further 3-5 minutes until you have a fluffy light mousse.
  • Step 9 Assemble the Crepes: Either spread or pipe some of the cream cheese mousse in the centre of the red velvet crepe and finish off with the drizzle on top.
  • Step 10 Enjoy x
